This is, as is pretty well known, an historical phenomenon in American history- and unfortunately it has stirred up a certain amount of contention too- the coming forth of The Book Of Mormon, which Joseph Smith claimed to translate by means of a higher gift. I say this is actually truthful; there were in fact a people who came over here from Israel region, who differed greatly from the jewish people collectively in that they were fervent Christians; their progenitor, Lehi, had had a vision, in which he was advised to depart from Israel, etc.... This would appear to be just before A.D.. From the start, or perhaps after some time, they became an especially delightful (or "delightsome", Book of M language) offshoot of their "tribe". Possibly idiosyncratic, they really wanted there to be in establishment a Church-State, where virtually every member must profess the religious beliefs; must not come out against them, etc.... In practicality, with the dangers and difficulties of survival, they interpreted needed to be very Kick-A! It appears that trouble developed when certain wanted to go over to Paganism, a different religion, and developed hostility towards the religious/civil government; became outcasts, through which a persevering conflict developed. Eventually, very tragically, this people whom, as I mentioned actually were a delightful, favored people, in this conflict were all killed by the resentful and hostile dissenters! What remains- a significant issue- in this discussion is to point out that Joseph Smith fell into a grievous error, claiming that God and his Son had appeared to him; that others appeared; that he was endowed with a commission to restore the True Church Of Jesus Christ- none of this is true, at all; certain Fallen Angels entered into the picture and caused and inspired deceptively considerable institution of this basically false idea.
The doctrinal set forth in the Book involves idiosyncratic moulding of truthful doctrine, such as "There is no name given, neither way to be saved under heaven, except through Jesus Christ, who is The Holy One Of Israel" etc.... That is, some influence from the Negative, or Power Beings. "Condemn us not because of our imperfections" they wrote, perhaps referring to the wisdom in accepting their "testimony", having had manifestation of great attainment among them... The divinity of Jesus Christ cannot be doubted.
